"Down and Derby"

It’s an unforgettable sound.

The unmatched rattle of wood. plastic, and  aluminum that is the Pine Wood Derby.

Cub Scout Pack 31, of Old Zionsville, held its annual Pine Wood Derby race at the Vera Cruz Fire Company on Saturday.

Nearly 130 scouts, parents and fellow diehard race fans, packed into the room to see who had built Pack 31’s fastest car.

It’s a rare thing to see, but in a first-round race, the electronic eye revealed a tie between two Wolf scouts.  From then on, the racing got even more intense as lane three of the track caused three separate cars to crash unexpectedly.

Among the most creative cars in the race were Nathan Zimmerman’s Gecko Lizard car and Gabe Schmeltzle’s Goofy shaped racer.

Three by three, scouts and their cars watched in anticipation as the slope of forty feet, decided a victor.  15 cars advanced to the finals where the winner would be decided.

In the end, Nicholas Ritter, Kevin Hedrick, and Graham Schellenberger took the honors as Pack 31’s most skilled builders.

Although only these three will advance to the District race, every Cub Scout there was a winner.  Because, you see, win or lose, all that really matters is that you have done your best.
